Bring the Farm to Your Preschool Classroom: Fun Farm & Harvest Activities for Toddlers

Fall is here, and it’s the perfect time to explore the farm and harvest season with your little learners! I love creating hands-on, engaging activities that help toddlers and preschoolers learn through play, and this season, my focus is on farm animals, crops, and all things harvest.

Here are a few fun ideas you can try in your classroom or home with your kids:

1. Farm Animal Circle Time

Bring a few toy farm animals to circle time and talk about the sounds they make. You can even turn it into a fun song session with Old MacDonald Had a Farm or a simple fingerplay like Five Little Ducks Went Out One Day. Toddlers love making the animal sounds themselves, which helps build language and listening skills.

2. Harvest Sensory Bin

Create a simple indoor sensory bin using dried corn, small pumpkins, and toy farm animals. Children can scoop, pour, and sort, exploring textures while developing fine motor skills. For an outdoor twist, try a pumpkin washing station with warm water and sponges—kids love pretending to “clean the harvest.”

3. Farm-Themed Playdough Fun

Use brown playdough to make “farm fields” and add small animals, mini tractors, and popsicle stick fences. This activity encourages imaginative play while strengthening hand muscles for early writing.

4. Mud Kitchen Farmers’ Market

Set up a pretend market with play fruits, vegetables, baskets, and utensils. Children can role-play being farmers and shoppers, practicing social skills, counting, and imaginative play.

These are just a few ways to bring the farm and harvest season into your classroom, but I’ve created a complete weekly lesson plan with even more circle times, crafts, sensory activities, math, writing, music, small world, dramatic play, and parent communication ideas.

If you want a full, ready-to-use week of Farm & Harvest activities designed for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 2–3), you can grab the complete lesson plan in my TPT store: HERE
